Nathaniel Paul is a Brooklyn-based songwriter, producer and multi-instrumentalist, also known as one half of the husband-and-wife duo The Bergamot. We've
covered Nathaniel's music before. His solo single "King's Grave" came out on October 23. Written partly in response to his father's death, it examines the loss of idealism and the relationships that remain when expectations fall apart.
Nathaniel sings with long pauses, as if weighing every word, as if each one takes real effort and thought to get out. The guitar chords follow the same pattern, slowly hanging in the air before coming to a stop. It gives the whole song this strange, sedated quality, like everything is moving in slow motion. Every now and then, though, the drums start to pick up, as if something inside is stirring. Like those little springs of emotion we all have bubbling away somewhere beneath even the calmest exterior.
