Planète Silence is the project of a Paris-born musician now based on Réunion Island. After years in different bands, he began writing songs in both French and English under this name. "Haunted Soul" deals with insomnia and the search for something to hold on to. It is available on Bandcamp ahead of its wider release on November 19.
The wall-of-sound guitars immediately remind me of The Jesus and Mary Chain, and I really love the vocals here. They have such an unusual character, breathy to the point of being almost spooky, and there's something in the way the singer delivers those emotional lines that brings Robert Smith to mind, especially on The Cure's "Lullaby."
What's especially cool is how dark and hazy the production sounds, while the melodies are so sunny, warm, and full of joy. It gives the whole song this wonderful bittersweet quality, and I've always had a soft spot for bittersweet songs! There's also an incredible amount of melodic detail here, with all those guitar lines, vocal melodies, and shimmering textures playing off each other. At times, it almost feels like everything is overflowing, like they've somehow managed to squeeze twice as much music into the song as it should be able to hold. And I love that! It's noisy, romantic, a little spooky, and ridiculously catchy. What a combination!
