LISTEN: Chris Murphy – Songs from the Trees
Chris Murphy is a New York-born, LA-based violinist and songwriter who plays somewhere north of 200 shows a year and describes his sets as a live film score. Songs From The Trees, out July 3 on Teahouse Records, is seven songs cut in five days in a 16th-century monastery in Plymouth, with Seth Lakeman on strings and Josiah J. Manning engineering.

Murphy writes in the Dylan-Cohen line, plainspoken and a little weathered, and the layered instruments here add depth, with guitars adding both warmth and anxiety and fiddle both holding the rhythm and playing lamenting melodies with reverberation.
