The Elusives are a Dublin band that seems to take its name seriously. Joe Brady (vocals, drums) and Paul Gilligan (guitars, synths, vocals) have been making music together since the 1990s, yet over the years they have played live only a handful of times, each time to a packed room in their home city.
In 2025 singer Laura Hand joined them, and the trio began work on a debut album, recorded at home with no budget and due before summer 2027. "Run Away Into The Night," out on October 9, is its first official single.
The song pulls you deep into its atmosphere, starting with the slowly enveloping intro: thirty seconds of anxious guitar alongside a catchy riff on an FM synth, that classic sound of little bells (or whatever they are).
What makes the song interesting is the contrast inside it. On one side there's a rhythm that is insanely alive, racing off somewhere, as if you were part of a chase (and the chase is happening in retro-futuristic cars in an action movie shot in 1985). On the other hand, there's a relaxed, almost lulling vocal melody. Brady takes the lead, with Hand on backing vocals, and they sing it so calmly that it doesn't grab you by the collar the way pop songs usually do. It creeps into you slowly, like smoke from a fog machine, like neon mist.
Toward the end the sense of drama builds, the song picks up speed, and the guitar solo just takes off into the sky.
