We've recently
covered music by Jam and the Benzos, a music project by Yücem Varoğlu, a Cypriot DIY musician. His music bears a special quality, because it's all written, performed, produced and sung by one man.
Now we'd like to talk about three more songs by this talented man, both in his words and our own.
The first one is called "Dua" ("Prayer"). Its emotion can feel very different, depending on the mood your spirit is in, when you're listening to the song, ranging from calm and serene to desperate.
The artist says it was "inspired by a scene in HBO's
Angels In America, where one of the lead charachters, has a near death experience and goes to Heaven, only to find out that God has left us, so the song is really about asking God to came back and not abandon His children".
Another notable song is "Gecenin Kara Kanatlarında" ("Black Wings of the night"). Its melody is simple yet really beautiful and the instrumentation is rich and mesmerizing. I couldn't help imagining dances and fires in the desert, with people celebrating the sand storm that is coming their way.
For Yücem it is about what he imagines death to be: "familiar voices, illuminated paths, whisper of winds... rather more mysterious lyrics, which would let the listener find their own meaning".
"Decontamination", another highly melodic and equally hypnotic piece, "was written at the end of 2020, peak of pandemic". For Yücem it symbolizes, "more importantly so, jumping from a very passionate but toxic relationship, to an unsolutely safe but unfortunately dull relationship". And, moreover, the start of "
the age of Aquarius, which would bring extreme changes to human perception, almost a rebellion among people".
